XCOM 2 App Reviews

19 Customer Reviews:

I have a Macbook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) with 2,5Ghz i7, 16GB memory and Intel iris Pro 1539 MB Graphics card. Of course I cannot play the game on full graphics, but I can play it on low with some medium settings. And the Graphics are still great. So if you are hecitating to buy this game or not because you are scared the macbook will not support it… buy it! It is so worth it!

+ Graphics good + Story good + Gameplay good + Customization of soldiers + Improvement to prior XCOM version - waiting for DLC - price 30€ would have been more suitable

fleisch54 v1.0.2 · 10 years ago

The XCom series has always brought to the table immersive, exciting turn based strategy, and this version is no different. Having been a fan of XCom since the original UFO defense, Firaxis has refined and improved upon what was almost impossible to improve upon. If you’ve never played XCom, dive in. If you have, then you know what I’m talking about. Aside from the drawback of needing a powerhouse computer to run the game, it’s a fun, very replayable experience. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE PROPER HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS BEFORE PURCHASING. I currently run it on the Cynlinder Mac Pro with D700s. Hopefully the expansions will appear on the App Store soon as well. Thanks Jake and the team - keep up the great work!

The game is stunning. Installation was a breeze. Even my 2012 macbook pro which barely meets requirements plays the game wonderfully. For any fan of the X-com series (I played the originals back in the 90’s) and the re-make, this is a must have. Even on the lower visual settings, the game looks great, plays well, and is challenging. Can’t wait for the DLC to come along. Very happy with my purchase, and just wish I had more time.

v1.0.2 - TO DRAMATICALLY REDUCE RETURN FROM MISSION BASE LOADING TIMES: 1) while your squad is returning to your base wait several seconds for a jerky and very noticable animation pause lasting a second or two to occur and finish. 2) now you can press the CAPS LOCK and wait momentarily for the next step to trigger [note that you must freshly activate the CAPS LOCK feature regardless of its on/off status] 3) the game will instantly lock up again for another 1-8 seconds or so and fully complete loading as it actually does all the necessary resource loading work in that one animation frame when you are successful at triggering this! This saves you waiting literally minutes in some cases! Pressing the CAPS LOCK key too soon will stop the workaround from actually working at all and you will just have to wait the usual 30 seconds to several minutes depending on your hardware and game settings! Sadly there is no such simple work around for any of the other noticeable delays in the initial release version. By all accounts, and there have been many, the perfomance issues are present on all platforms the game has been released on and are not actually Feral’s fault. There is already a newer v1.1 update out from Feral for its non Mac App Store (MAS) OS X releases of the game as of a few weeks ago. The v1.1 MAS release will surely arrive here eventually...

Not playable at all

It is kind of a joke? Not working properly on Macbook Pro 2.8 2014. Going down to 1600x1200 did not helped. Not playable at all.

I was a big fan of the first XCom and this is more of the same. They made some changes in the troop classes and introduced some new game dynamics but nothing drastic, which I appreciated. The only downside for me was that there is no heavy armored mech type soldiers. Maybe they are holding that back for DLC like they did with the first game. They do have some armor suits that are kind of like the old mech suits from XCom but not nearly at cool or menacing looking. The cut scenes are well done, like they were in the first game and the story is ok. I like the way they did the global map and the ship/base building. Both are much superior to the first game in my opinion. The game ran well on my macbook pro but its and upper end machine. It did crash every so often, so I made a habit of saving my progress frequently. Overall, I gave this game 4 stars. It would have got 5 is it didn’t crash and if they incorporated heavy mech suits like they had in the XCom Enemy Within. I cant wait for XCom 3.

Its the same game, but with some twists. I don’t mind this at all as I player in every level many times and never got tired of it. The way tp build a base, to admin your resources and all makes this game very enjoyable. If you liked XCOM enemy unknown and within, you probably will like this one too. Expect addictment.

Glacially slow and unreliable. Once you advance it crashes after everymissin. Fixes might be available from mods and updates but not in the app store.

1 -2 minutes every loading screen? Seriously? The game play is really nice if you can take it since it’s a game that’s basically stacked odds against you heavily lol but the waiting for every load screen that takes a minute and more? No way. Even in the game play the switch in turns take up to and even more than 45 seconds sometimes. I played it on my mac, thought that was the issue so switched to pc and got so frustrated i switched back to my mac to play it. I hope the makers are even reading these reviews because if you google ‘why is xcom 2 runnig so slow’ you will see hordes of the same complaint and I’m taking about the regular excuse ‘maybe it’s your specs’. I’m playing it on a 1TB macbook pro ( first i thought the file size was the issue on my pc so switched to mac with lots of storage) and still turned all my settings down and this load of BS with the loading screens is happening. Anyine figures it out please hit me up.

Vikingzilla v1.0.2 · 10 years ago

I have been playing this game since a few days after it cam out. I have even managed to play it the new Macbook 12”. It play well and does not crash often. One complaint is it is slow when loading a mission, and also when completing a mission to get back to base it takes like five minutes. But awsome other than that. I have also played the other version the original and enemy within. This game has been so addictive that I have been playing all waking hours except when I have to go to work.

I love this game. But im very confused as to how to get the DLC for the apple store download. I have searched everywhere and cant seem to find it. It should be released by now right?

Jackthekirkpatrick v1.0.2 · 9 years ago

Its about time, I was wondering how long it would be before Apple got the new updated version of Xcom 2 with the DLC packs and the ability to download mods. Its fast and runs smooth its been tweaked to run very well on OS X. I was running the Mac version of the game by steam and it was extremely buggy with crashes all the time. Clipping, running slow, etc. this is a major step up I can play my favorite game without the need to restart the game from constant crashes. The game play is excellent, story lines, missions, character pool, creating your own characters and profiles, research so on.

First, this game is pretty and it works well on a modern Mac. (I have 32gb and a 2.0 video card on an i5.) But…don’t use this when you have Chrome in place. You’ll get flicker like *crazy* and rendering artifacts. I can say it’s a blast to play and I hope that it continues to get better.

A great game. The Dynamics from X-Com have been taken to a new level, as has design - but all for the better. What you got in ‘1’ by ways of mystery and surprise may not be here anymore, but the execution and story development is as good if not better than the first outing. A word of caution; especially on Retina systems, this game has steep requirements (but rewards with beautiful graphics). On a highest-end iMac 5k Retina (that is, top CPU, RAM and Graphics), you need to dial down the res to half if you want to run on ‘max’ graphics. That’s ok though, as it’s still beautiful and a lot of the antialising makes super-res less ‘urgent’. Great Game, and a really good port!

Dosers · 10 years ago

I have downloaded this game, I have the first two generations on iPad, i love this game a lot. i think this game worth a try. i expected that this game can not be good on macbook pro i5. And the results is, do not be like me, if you like this game get a pc or if it eventually launched on ps4 or xbox. Anyway i have asked for refund hopefully Apple can understand the situation. And those who wants to play this game and want to have a try, well my suggestion is no. but if you insist, well good luck. in conclusion, game is good, not competible with macbook pro unless you have highest hardware edition.

Great one

Its the same game, but with some twists. I don’t mind this at all as I have played in every level many times and never got tired of it. The way tp build a base, to admin your resources and all makes this game very enjoyable. If you liked XCOM franchise, you probably will like this one too. Expect addictment. Do note, that those that put a bad rating, do it with hate because they could not run the game.

System requirements are wrong

My computer meets all the system requirements listed in the description. Every one. *And* the app store auto-checker explicitly says that it worked on this Mac. I paid my money. Spent a night downloading. And when I try to open the app is just says "Sorry! This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for this game." Terrible work, XCom 2.

Fun Game. Great Developer.

I bought the app store version of the game with all down load content available on the app store. The game is a nice update to XCOM. It does take a newer machine to run the game. I am on a 13’ MacBook pro 2016 and for me it runs fine. I don’t expect to use the highest graphic settings. I am a fan of strategy games that I can stop and take my time to make a move. I do think there are too many missions in which everything is timed. I do like the how customized I can get on my soldiers. On average, I complete the game at around 30 hours. You also need to plan the rooms on the Avenger. Limited space makes your choices feel as if they matter. If you liked XCOM, you most likely will love this update. As for the download content, everything is available but the Chosen expansion pack. For those of us who bought this version and want to play the Chosen pack, the developer as stated that you should contact them directly. Don’t post here about the issue. Get in touch with them, they worked with me and took care of me. They met and exceeded my expectations.

Gatewayii · 8 years ago

If you want War of the Chosen get steam

This version of Xcom-2 doesn’t have War of the chosen addon and they’re not planning on coding it for the appstore version of the game. Please DON’T buy the game here as it is a NON-REFUND purchase. Also there is no mods avalable for this version. Don’t buy this game here please buy it elsewhere so you don’t get srcewed like me.

Works perfectly, amazing game!

I have the 13’ inch, 2016 MacBook Pro with a 2.0 ghz processor, which is below the minimum requirements, but the game works perfectly for me. It has slightly long load times when loading the battles, but runs perfectly smooth during the gameplay. I don’t have the resolution and a couple other things just above the lowest settings and it looks great, much better than I had anticipated. I wrote all of that for those like me who wondered if they could run the game or not. Now, as for the gameplay, fantastic. It is very similar to Enemy Unknown, just updated with more interesting soldiers and abilities. I am a father of two and run a company, so I don’t play many games, and most games are not that interesting to me any more, but I bought this because I loved the originals. I thought I would get bored of it quickly, but it has been the opposite experience. The more I play it, the more I want to play. I love thinking out my turns and seeing the wins, and I have a love/hate relationship with losing my soldiers because I hate losing them but love that it amps up the intensity and realism. The only downside I have at the moment is the Avatar project, which is a countdown system in the game that forces you to advance in the game in order to lower the doomsday event which ends in you losing. Being a turn-based game, people attracted to it, like myself, are largely going to be people who like to slowly, methodically think things through before making their moves. I like to take my time, even in the campaign. Adding a doomsday meter in the campaing takes that from me and doesn’t let me build up my forces and slowly work through the game like I enjoy doing. I wish there was an option to turn that off so I didn’t feel rushed. I know there are cheats and mods, but at the time of writing this review they don’t seem to be available for Mac, at least not easily because I can’t figure out how to get them to work.

DO NOT BUY THROUGH APPLE

The app says it contains in app purchases, IT DOES NOT! I asked for a refund and was declined. Buy this game from Green Man Gaming, and run it through steam…. Then it’s a 5 Star game. Great job Sid Meier!

I’m a big fan of Xcom2 really and can’t stop playing that game on my xbox . But when I desided to play it on my Mac Book Pro It’s has so many annoying requirments that preventing the game of starting .. and now I payed 50 $ for nothing and I have to buy a new lab top to play this game I guess !!!! I got a new MacBook Pro and I love this game on it!

I just got the latest suped up MacBook Pro that came out late 2016, and this game is the best! Tell you the truth... I only got this computer just to play this game lol! 😂

So wish I could get my money back

I wanted to like this game, but I’m left feeling I was just ripped off. Gameplay is clunky, and will just end up frustrating you more than any amount of fun you can get out of it.

I am a huge fan of the franchise - however, I started the down load yesterday and it’s still showing only 10 GB completed!

DLCs don’t work for new MacBook Pro

The game works fine on medium graphics setting with the new maxed out 15" MacBook Pro with touch bar, but for some reason the DLCs aren’t available for download in the APP. I’ve talked with the game’s contact support with little luck in fixing the issue.

Game wont start

This review is not for the game but for the app itself. I met the mininmum requirments for the app and it still isnt even enough. I usually dont bother with mac games but i gave it a chance and boy was i wrong. The specs for this game should pretty much just say anything before 2015 will not work. I have late model macpro 2011 updated. I guarentee you a 2009 pc could run this game.. smh Model Name:MacBook Pro Model Identifier:MacBookPro8,1 Processor Name:Intel Core i5 Processor Speed:2.4 GHz Number of Processors:1 Total Number of Cores:2 L2 Cache (per Core):256 KB L3 Cache:3 MB Memory:4 GB Boot ROM Version:MBP81.0047.B2B
